Emory Upton: Father of the Modern U.S. Army

The title “Father of the Modern U.S. Army” might seem a bit lofty, but Major General Emory Upton earned every bit of it. He emerged from the battlefields of the Civil War as one of the military’s top strategic minds.

He wrote books on tactics for infantry, cavalry, and artillery. He scoured the globe observing other militaries to find the best practices. He gave the first in-depth, methodical analysis of the U.S. military, resulting in numerous proposals including: a standing Army, standardized promotions, an emphasis on military education, and even basic battlefield maneuvers.

His name isn’t as well known as many military heroes, but Upton’s effect, his legacy, is far longer lasting.
