MYSTERY: Winchesters of the Centennial Exposition

The Winchester exhibit at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia remains a bit of mystery to scholars today. Period sources state approximately 200 guns were exhibited in the Winchester booth, but today no definitive list exists of the arms that were on display.

Few details are known, but known pieces of the puzzle begin to show an interesting picture. With a combination of Winchester factory letters, shipping records, the books of previous firearms scholars, serial number ranges, and order numbers we can deduce some of the spectacular firearms shown by Winchester at one of the most important expositions of the era.
