Miller vs Colt: A Revolving Rifle Progression

J. & J. Miller patented their revolving rifle in 1829, a full seven years before Samuel Colt’s Patent Arms Company began production. So why does Samuel Colt receive the credit for inventing the revolver?

Thankfully, Lead Historian Seth Isaacson has a beautiful and high condition example of both a Miller revolving rifle and a Colt Paterson First Model Ring Lever to compare their similarities and their differences as the designs progress.

The Miller patent revolving rifles were produced in large portion by William Billinghurst, who also purchased the patent in 1841. Thus, these revolving rifles are frequently referred to as Billinghurst revolving rifles.
