The Colt of Gene Autry: “The Singing Cowboy”

Any antique, black powder frame Colt Single Action Army is a collectible in its own right, but when you can put it in the hands of one of the 20th century’s most prolific entertainers, it enters a world all its own.

Gene Autry, “The Singing Cowboy,” is a name not familiar to many in recent generations, so we make sure to detail just how active Autry was as a performer. His extensive portfolio of work, not only is still experienced by many today, but shaped ideas on Western culture and country music for decades.

This Colt was donated by Gene Autry for an auction to benefit the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Arms & Armor division. Quite the departure from celebrity social mores surrounding firearms today.
