This capping breech loading carbine from the American Civil war was designed and patented by Ambrose E. Burnside in 1856. His breech system was one of the very first that could effectively seal the joint between the barrel and breech. The cavalry carbine was tested by the US Army in 1857 resulting the adoptation of the arm.
The heart of the system is a cone shaped cartridge case that is loaded into the chamber from the front. The case expands on the gas pressure and its bubbled neck seals the joint so no gases can hurt the face of the soldier.
The carbine was .54 caliber and fired a 380-400 grain weighting 562-564 caliber conical bullet.
54000 such arns were delivered to the Union Army during the conflict.

Well this is my channel and these are my impressions about shooting old and repro blackpowder and cartridge guns. You will find target shooting, hunting, reloading and military history related videos here starring pre 1945 firearms. Since I was a little child I knew I want to be a history teacher. In fact I graduated as one. Later I studied military sciences on university level, and now I am doing my phd in firearms history while I teach military history at the university. That’s my life, my hobby. I hope you’ll enjoy my videos as much I enjoyed making them. Greetings form Hungary, the land of good wines and beautiful women. Oh yes, and please forgive my Hunglish. 😉
