Pour l’armée française, les combats de 1940 et les améliorations dans les technologies d’armement et de fabrication rendent la nécessité de développer un nouveau FM évidente, tout en adoptant le concept d’une arme automatique polyvalente, capable de servir aussi bien au sein d’un groupe de combat que sur affût. Adopté en 1952, la AA52 et ses variantes continue de servir.
