This daisho set of katana and wakizashi swords is positively awash in its nautical theme. The wonderfully sculpted gold, copper, and silver elements portray the sakanazukushi (魚づくし) or “sea life” theme in stunning detail depicting squid, shrimp, fish, and several octopi with wrapping tentacles.
The blades are unsigned, but are identified as authentic, and thought to be the work of Omori Teruhide, a craftsman active in the Edo period (1730-1798). Other examples of Teruhide’s work currently resides at the metropolitan Museum of Art and other prominent institutions.
These high art Japanese swords have been ranked as “especially precious” by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai (日本美術刀剣保存協会) or The Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords.
