German drillings, a combination of two shotguns barrels and one rifle barrel, offered much in the way of versatility for the German hunter. As with most fine arms, they also enjoyed fine embellishment and changed to suit their users’ preferences over time.
Here, Howard Dixon examines two classic drillings, one in a traditional configuration and the other in an unusual barrel arrangement that perhaps reflects a change in hunting of the period. With the rifle barrel placed on top, they are known as schienendrillings, rib drillings, rail drillings, and even waldläufer (literally “forest runner”).
