The Arisaka Type 99 short rifle is often attributed with one of the strongest actions, with some of the best mitigating gas escapes to deal with an overcharged cartridge… but what about the rest of the rifle?
The Imperial Japanese Army decided to put a wide aperture rear sight tha thas an anti-aircraft capabilty, with a slick “cock-on-close” straight bolt Mauser type action.
We delve into the effectiveness of these sights, but most importantly, why did the IJA decide on this radical departure from the standard type rifle sights of the era?
(TLDR: the sights aren’t amazing for targets, but VERY FAST, and well suited for the IJA’s fighting doctrine)
