Hiram S Maxim developed the first automatic machine gun in 1884. His prototype used a fairly complicated mechanism – but he was the first person to use the force of recoil from firing a cartridge to extract the spent cartridge, cock the firing mechanism, load a fresh cartridge and then fire the next cartridge fully automatically. His prototype included a regulator to vary the firing speed from 2-3 per minute to about 600 p/m. His designs matured over the next 2 years to produce a world standard design in 1887. Further details on Maxim guns can be found by googling for Maxim autoMG.
Hi, I’m Rob, otherwise known as VBBSMYT.
I create the animations on my iMac using Cinema 4D, which I find very intuitive, and allows me to add smoke and flames, and then send the model to my trusty Render farm.
I make my models as accurate as possible through reference books and particularly good drawings. You may have seen my animations of early torpedoes and machine guns on YouTube. I enjoy finding out how things work and it has been fascinating to track the development from the late Victorian period up to World War 1.
