Avant l’avènement de la carabine fédérale de 1851 pour tous les corps de carabiniers suisses, chaque canton utilisait plus ou moins ce qu’il voulaient, chaque carabinier utilisant même parfois simplement son propre fusil privé. Le canton de Berne a fait les choses un peu différemment et a été le pionnier de l’idée d’une carabine universelle pour tous et profitant de la toute nouvelle capsule à percussion. Cette idée a ensuite déclenché une vague de projets similaires dans les autres cantons.
