Before the advent of the 1851 federal rifle for all Swiss sharpshooter corps, each canton used more or less whatever it wanted, with each rifleman sometimes even simply using his own private rifle. Canton of Bern did things a little differently and pioneered the idea of a universal rifle for all, taking advantage of the brand new percussion cap. This idea then sparked a wave of similar projects in other cantons.
