The Christmas Truce

World War 1 began in July 1914 and many expected the conflict to be over by Christmas. By December millions had died in miserable conditions with no end in sight.

But on Christmas Eve 1914, German and British soldiers along along the Western Front cautiously rose from their trenches in a spontaneous truce, to sing, share treats from home, take photographs, and a few impromptu games of soccer. It was to be known as The Christmas Truce.

It was a brief shining moment, interrupting the din of war, to wonderfully symbolize the peace and grace of the Christmas season
