Today, Lead Historian Seth Isaacson shows us what a standard issue service longarm looked like over 200 years ago. Known as the U.S. Model 1814 and 1817, these early rifles share many traits, but while the Model 1814 only had contracts to produce 2,000 examples, the Model 1817 saw its numbers exceed 38,000. Either example would have enjoyed a large advantage over period muskets thanks to their rifled barrels.
One is a rare collectible, the other an essential part of any U.S. military arms collection, and Seth goes over the differences that took place before the “Common rifle” saw widespread adoption.
