Master aboard the USS Monitor, Lieutenant Louis N. Stodder was called upon by fate to display an unusual amount of courage. Not only did Stodder heed that call when his Monitor fought the CSS Virginia in the well-known “Monitor v. Merrimack” naval battle, he also rose to the occasion months later upon her deck, to once again exude this most uncommon virtue.
This remarkable Tiffany & Co. sword is a living exhibit in steel and gold, and serves as a beautiful reminder of Lt. Stodder’s tremendous bravery.
