Not a rifle, but not artillery. Not a Gatling, but not a machine gun. It&#8217;s permanent place between roles and between designs, prevented it from finding the success it perhaps deserved.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Gardner gun, and it&#8217;s subsequent improvements by Pratt &#038; Whitney employee Edward G. Parkhurst, are a beautiful and hypnotic example of 19th century engineering. The reciprocating motion of the Gardner can still be seen in the machine guns of today. Only 21 were produced for the U.S. government, and this is one of them.  Only 11 are still thought to exist.
